• Oyo State Governor, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi
A representative of Oke Ogun Students of Oyo State, Comr. Adesina Julius .O (Prestige), has written an open letter to the Oyo State Governor, Sen. Isaika Abiola Ajimobi, accusing him of disregarding the welfare of students of the state tertiary institutions, while also warning him not to take the silence of the people for granted.
According to the student leader, “Some voices have been lost to the realities on ground based on the state of the economy of our dear state but we have resolved that silence is no more golden as we, the students of Oyo state are tired of the lies and deceits of the government of the day’, adding “It is so disheartening that tertiary education has been neglected by your administration and the woeful state of our tertiary institutions is remorseful. It bothers the mind that there is no specific project executed by your administration for state institutions, rather poor welfare condition, decay in infrastructures, increment in tuition fees throughout the state are visible projects you have done for us.
“It is glaring that the governor is playing with the intelligence of comrades and officials of students' associations within the state. He has taken the silence of these officials, cadres, and comrades for granted; they know the economic realities of the state but the governor has dodged from responsibilities under the pretense of economic realities. As a former students' union leader and product of struggle, he ought to know how the system works and should work in line with its mode of operation.”
Also, he told the governor, “Your Excellency; you have promised us in one of your meetings with our representative that both scholarships and bursary will be paid but it is pathetic that we trusted you and you sold our trust to the dogs. The students' populace needs your timely intervention on these issues raised as an ultimatum of 20 days has been given to your Excellency by the generality of Oyo state students; it is my belief that as a proactive governor; you will surely attend to this.”
Comrade Adesina said that he is not only writing as a Student under the Federation of Oyo State Students Union (FOSSU) but also as a citizen of the state who has been deprived of his entitlement as a student.
However, as the opening shot before pouring out the mind of the students, he wrote “First and foremost, I would like to appreciate your Excellency, Sen. Isaika Abiola Ajimobi, the executive Governor of Oyo state for your many efforts towards the development of our dear state. It is glaring that the governor has contributed immensely towards the infrastructures and construction of roads and beautifying the state. All these are wonderful actions that need to be appreciated.
“Your Excellency; you have done so well even though teachers are being owed salaries, which has negatively affected the speed of development in our education sector. One of the many responsibilities of responsible pressure groups or students associations like ours is to serve as a watchdog for the actions and inactions of the government and also to agitate for the rights and entitlements of our members.
“On this note, I write on behalf of Oyo state students who have been deprived of their rights, entitlements and forsaken by your administration. Permit me to take you through the historical line, it should be noted that it was during the administration of Gov. Alao Akala that students of Oyo state have received bursary which by implication means that your administration has not duly paid bursary since inception apart from the shady deals of giving some students to study at the technical university,” Comrade Adesina wrote.
