Aubameyang surpasses Henry and Van Persie to make Arsenal history

Arsenal's Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang celebrates scoring the team's second goal during the English Premier League football match between Arsenal and Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium in London on April 1, 2018.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made history on Sunday as he scored two goals in Arsenal’s 3-0 win against Stoke, as he continued his electric start to life at the Emirates. The Gabon international, who arrived from Borussia Dortmund for a club-record £56million in January scored twice in the second half before passing up the opportunity to score a hat-trick by allowing Alexandre Lacazette to take a penalty in the dying moments of the match.

Having already scored from the spot himself, Aubameyang stepped aside to let the France international score on his return from injury in a selfless act, but the 28-year-old had already wrapped up a piece of history with his contributions on the pitch.

He became the first Arsenal player to score five goals in his first six Premier League matches for the Gunners, having already found the net against Watford, Everton and Brighton.

Considering the quality of the likes of great strikers Thierry Henry, Robin van Persie and Dennis Bergkamp who have all shone for the north London giants, Aubameyang’s achievement should not be taken lightly.

After the match, he explained his decision to not take the penalty that could have made it six in six, saying: ‘Of course I know that Laca[zette] is back and I think I score twice so I can let him shoot, it’s normal. ‘It’s good for his confidence so that’s why.
