Pep Guardiola has warned Manchester City that the Premier League leaders will need to produce a perfect game to get past Liverpool FC in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night.
The Citizens have endured a difficult week in an otherwise brilliant second season under Guardiola following successive losses to Liverpool FC and Manchester United.
The Reds were emphatic 3-0 winners against the Premier League pacesetters in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final last week thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Roberto Firmino.
Manchester City were looking to make amends in the Manchester derby last weekend and surged into a commanding 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to efforts from Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan.
However, Manchester United sprung a surprise with a second-half comeback thanks to Paul Pogba’s quick-fire double before Chris Smalling scored the winner to deny Manchester City the title.
Liverpool FC have scored 20 times in their last nine games in all competitions and Klopp’s men will fancy their chances of scoring a vital away goal.
Guardiola warned his Manchester City squad that they will need to produce a perfect game to get past Liverpool FC in the Champions League quarter-finals.
“We have to make the almost perfect game to go through,” Guardiola told his pre-match media conference.
“The perfect scenario is to go through. Every time we play Liverpool we know each other. If we concede a goal, don’t give up.
“We did many times, we can in a short space of time create chances and be clinical. But even if we are not clinical we have to move on.
“Liverpool is really well defensively organised. it is not easy to create chances but we will try.”
